High-throughput process
  • Synthesis robot

HIPOLE Jena relies on high-throughput synthesis and AI-supported methods to accelerate the development of new polymers and materials. For this purpose, a synthesis robot is used for the automated parallel synthesis of polymers and materials with the possibility of integrating characterization data to control and monitor chemical reactions based on AI-supported methods.

Battery manufacture and characterization
  • Coin Cell Crimper

For the research on polymer-based thin-film batteries, an electric coin cell crimper is used to fabricate coin cell batteries.

  • Pouch cell fabrication

For the research on polymer-based thin-film batteries, HIPOLE Jena is working on the fabrication of pouch cell batteries. The assembly process includes the use of a vacuum sealer, a heating sealer, and an ultrasonic welder.

  • Battery cycler

For the research on polymer-based thin film batteries, a battery cycler is used to characterize new polymer-based electrodes and electrolyte materials with regard to their charge/discharge behavior in in coin, Swagelok®, and pouch cells.

  • Potentiostat

For the research on polymer redox flow batteries and polymer-based thin film batteries, a multi-channel potentiostat/galvanostat is used to characterize new polymer-based electrodes and electrolyte materials in redox flow, coin, Swagelok®, and pouch cells.

Synthesis of matelials
  • Miniature ballmill

For the research on polymer-based thin film batteries, small amounts of synthesized redox-active electrode materials need to be milled and homogenized as well as processed into small amounts of electrode paste using a miniature ballmill.

  • Glove boxes

The material and battery research at HIPOLE Jena includes working with water and oxygen sensitive samples where handling in gloveboxes under inert conditions is required.

  • Dual centrifuge

For the research on new materials at HIPOLE Jena, temperature sensitive samples can be homogenized, mixed, milled and dispersed in closed containers as well as centrifuged from −20 to 40 °C using a dual centrifuge.

Spectroscopy
  • Flow IR System

For the research on new materials at HIPOLE Jena, synthetic reactions can be monitored by online infrared (IR) measurements in order to gain important structural information for optimizing and understanding reactions.

  • ATR-IR Spectrometer

For the research on new materials at HIPOLE Jena, their characterization by infrared (IR) spectroscopy is carried out using an ATR-IR spectrometer.

  • Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC)

For the research on polymers, thermal characterizations are carried out which includes differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for the measurements of thermodynamic data, e. g. melting temperatures and glass transitions.

  • Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA)

For the research on new polymers, their thermal characterization is carried out which includes thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in order to investigate thermal stability and decomposition processes of the polymers.

  • Rheometer

For the research on new polymer-based materials, their flow properties in gel and viscous-type states can be characterized over a wide temperature range using a rheometer.

Chromatography
  • HPLC system

For the research on polymers, analytical separations of compound mixtures are carried out using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system.

  • Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) system

For the research on new polymers, the determination of molar masses and mass distributions by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a fundamental characterization step in order to optimize synthesis conditions and tailor polymer properties for future applications within HIPOLE Jena.
