Researchers from HIPOLE Jena, together with cooperation partners from Justus Liebig University Giessen and University of Münster, have published an article in Angewandte Chemie International Edition. Dr. Kangli Wang and Prof. Doreen Mollenhauer conducted the work in collaboration with the experimentally oriented research groups of Prof. Jürgen Janek and Prof. Wolfgang G. Zeier.

Using computational first-principles thermodynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, the current study investigates the interfacial stability of sulfide-based solid electrolytes in solid-state batteries. The results show which combinations of sulfide-based electrolytes, cathode materials, coatings, and lithium-silicon anodes can form particularly stable interfaces. Thus, the work provides guidance for material selection and targeted design of materials and interfaces in long-life solid-state batteries – a key element for safe and high-performance next-generation energy storage systems.
